Two years after Hurricane Maria devastated Puerto Rico, much has been repaired. Much work remains. The Real Property, Trusts & Estates Section of the American Bar Association was proud to support the recovery efforts by bringing our Fall Leadership meeting to San Juan this month.
Alterman Law Group contributed, in a small way, by sending our entire legal team to the conference. (That’s less grand than it sounds: our firm has two lawyers.) The Puerto Rican people were as warm and inviting as the sandy beaches and the restaurants of San Juan, and they hope that their fellow Americans will again come to visit and enjoy the island.

No one’s ever raved to me about their great experience calling a bank or an airline and getting only a recorded voice that says “Listen carefully, because our options have recently changed,” and then gives them the standard message to press 1 for an employee directory or 2 for more options.
You can manage your own real estate without a license. But what if you own it through a limited liability company, or a family trust, or as tenants in common with others? Last month the Oregon Court of Appeals affirmed the Real Estate Agency’s determination that if you’re receiving compensation for managing the property, you might be violating the law.
